Penguins’ Sidney Crosby undergoes surgery | What it means for Devils

Post by admin » Fri Nov 15, 2019 2:54 am

The Pittsburgh Penguins have played the majority of the 2019-20 season without injured center Evgeni Malkin. Now they’ll need to deal with the loss of their other star forward.

The team announced center Sidney Crosby underwent core muscle surgery on Thursday morning, which will force him out of the lineup for approximately six weeks. Crosby has already missed one game against the Rangers due to the injury.

That could keep the future Hall-of-Famer out until the calendar turns to 2020, and Crosby will miss two meetings against the Devils during that span.

The two teams will play at 7 p.m. on Friday at Prudential Center in Newark for their first meeting of the season, and they will play again one week later when the Devils head to Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 22, for a game at PPG Paints Arena.

Crosby had five goals and 12 assists in 17 game prior to the injury, and he’s put up big number against the Devils over the course of his career — like he has against pretty much every NHL team. In 65 career games against the Devils, Crosby has 33 goals and 39 assists for 72 points.

With the Devils at 5-8-4 this season, they need to start racking up wins and points to avoid falling completely out of contention for the playoffs. Taking advantage of a Penguins lineup lacking Crosby would be an important step in that quest.
